What specific modifications can be made to the preamp circuit of the Vox Mini3 G2 to achieve a more aggressive high-gain tone similar to that of its predecessor, the AC30?
To modify the preamp circuit of the Vox Mini3 G2 and achieve a more aggressive high-gain tone similar to the AC30, we'll need to dive into some electronics tinkering. Please note that these modifications will void your warranty, so proceed at your own risk. The stock preamp circuit in the Mini3 G2 is based on a single-ended, cathode-biased design with a 6N1S tube (a miniature 12AX7 equivalent). To get closer to the AC30's tone, we'll focus on two main areas: modifying the gain structure and tweaking the frequency response. Modification 1: Increase Gain**
The Mini3 G2 has a relatively low-gain preamp circuit compared to the AC30. We can boost the gain by increasing the voltage gain of the first stage (the input triode) using a simple resistor divider network. Replace R12 with a 220kΩ resistor
* Install a 100kΩ resistor in series with R13
This modification will increase the overall gain of the preamp, but be cautious not to overdo it, as excessive gain can lead to distortion and loss of clarity. Modification 2: Enhance Midrange Response**
The AC30's tone is characterized by a strong midrange presence. We can enhance this response by adding a small capacitor in parallel with R14 (the tone pot). Install a 0. F (or 47nF) ceramic or film capacitor in series with C18
* Adjust the value of C18 to around 10-15pF for optimal midrange presence
This modification will add a slight boost to the midrange frequencies, which should help the tone cut through better. Modification 3: Reduce Bass Response**
The Mini3 G2's stock preamp circuit has a relatively strong low-end response. To reduce the bass content and get closer to the AC30's tone, we can decrease the value of R15 (the bass pot). Replace R15 with a 1kΩ resistor
* Consider adding a small capacitor in parallel with C19 (around 10-15pF) to further attenuate low-end frequencies
This modification will reduce the overall bass response and help the tone sound more agile. Additional Tips**
To get an even closer AC30 tone, consider the following:
* **Biasing:** Adjust the bias voltage of the 6N1S tube to around -5V (using a bias pot or a trimmer). This will help optimize the tube's performance and reduce noise. Capacitor values:** Double-check the capacitor values in the preamp circuit, as some may be critical for tone accuracy. Consider replacing C8, C9, or C10 with higher-quality capacitors (e. WIMA or Sprague). Power supply:** Ensure your power supply is stable and clean to avoid noise and hum in the signal chain. Keep in mind that these modifications are a starting point, and you may need to experiment further to find the perfect tone for your style.

A very poor stove, very quiet, even for a home only stove, clean when unscrewed by 50% turns into a crunch. Overdrive? Better to forget that there is something like that in it. I compared with Marshall MG10CF, Marshall MG15, Yamaha GA15 , Fender Frontman 10G. Fender and Vox dropped out in the first shot, Marshall MG10CF ok, but has a slight correction, Marshall MG15 already better, but it sounded worse than Yamaha, which I did not even take into account. Marshall sounded more muffled compared to with Yamaha. And Yamaha crystal clear sound on cleans and quite sensible distortion. I tested the Female AV7 with two humbuckers.
