In 2018, Paul Reed Smith and John Mayer collaborated to create a new electric guitar, the PRS SE Silver Sky. This guitar has been praised for its vintage-inspired design and modern technology, which combine to produce a truly unique and versatile instrument.
At first glance, the PRS SE Silver Sky may look like a classic guitar from the 1960s with its curvy offset body shape and three single-coil pickups. However, upon closer inspection, it becomes clear that this guitar is a modern beast. The body is made of lightweight alder and finished with a high-gloss nitrocellulose lacquer that allows the wood to breathe and resonate freely.
One of the standout features of the Silver Sky is its trio of PRS 635JM pickups. These pickups were designed by Mayer and PRS to capture the vibe of some of his favorite vintage guitars. The middle pickup is reverse-wound, which cancels out hum when used in combination with the neck or bridge pickup. The pickups are controlled by a five-way blade switch, as well as a push/pull tone control for additional pickup configurations.
The neck on the Silver Sky has a 25.5-inch scale length and is made of maple with a rosewood fingerboard. The neck shape is based on Mayer’s personal ’63 Stratocaster, with a slightly thicker profile that allows for comfortable playing across the entire length of the neck. The frets are medium-jumbo sized and are perfectly rounded and polished for easy bending.
One of the most unique features of the Silver Sky is its PRS-designed, vintage-style tremolo bridge. This bridge has a six-point mount and a steel block, which provides greater sustain and stability than many other traditional tremolo designs. The tremolo arm is also designed to stay in place when not in use, rather than flopping around like some other tremolo arms may do.
